Again, sorry that it takes me so long to post...apparently I'm ALWAYS a procrastinator! ;) Now don't worry, I promise that I'm also going to school over here, not only doing fun things and traveling! I am in two classes here in Norway and in two through the University of Minnesota. Here, each one of my classes is 15 credits for a total of 30. Considering these are European credits, they will transfer back to about 15 credits at the U.
My first class that I am taking is DIKULT103, Digital Genres: Digital Media, Electronic Literature, and Computer Games. Sadly, I don't like this class as much as I thought I would. The concept of New Media Art is more computer based than art based, which if you know me, that's kind of the opposite of my interests. Even so, the class is interesting but it's a lot of work. I have a teacher from the United States and his expectations are what I'm used to at home, but not here. We have a lot of assignments and readings that usually take me a while to understand because I don't speak computer. Plus, some of the stuff we look at just doesn't seem like art to me. But to each their own, I guess!
My second class, MEVI111, An Introduction to the Norwegian Media System on a Global Context is extremely interesting. I have a Norwegian teacher for this class which I really enjoy! Even though the Norwegian school system is more laid back about homework and assignments, I'm still getting a lot out of the class. In this class, we learn about the Norwegian Media System and the main pillars of it. We also learn how the government in Norway is involved in the media system. We have also learned that a main aspect of the Norwegian Media System is to make information available to everyone no matter what part of Norway they live in. They also focus on having more of a "class-less" society and treating everyone as equals. This class has really given me new perspectives on Norwegian culture! |
The only real difference about attending college in Norway versus the US is that there really aren't any weekly assignments and your grade is based off of your final exam at the end of the semester. Classes are also on weird hours and schedules. Sometimes I have class, sometimes I don't. The classroom can also change day to day, I can't tell you how many times I've gone to class just to find myself in a different one because it was moved. But other than that, the teaching styles are the same as well as the books! I've included some pictures from the University that I have either taken myself or found online.
